GemTeck is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Teck Cominco Limited, which uses EQWin actively and extensively at its own minesites.

The software, originally known as the EQ-System, was developed by Teck Cominco in the late 70's as an in-house system to manage and report on environmental data gathered from their global mining and exploration operations. The software was significantly enhanced over the years to keep up with new environmental information requirements and emerging technology. However, it was not until 1995, after Teck Cominco had completed the Window-based version and renamed it EQWin, that they realized its potential as a commercially viable software product and subsequently began selling it to other mining companies. GemTeck was formed as a separate company in 1998 in order to further the development and marketing of EQWin and to capitalize on its potential.

GemTeck now provides EQWin software and services to hundreds of mining operations, solid waste management companies and environmental consultants in Australia, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, New Caledonia, Peru, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, South Africa, Sweden, Tanzania, USA, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.
